 | BIOSS | BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies Biological signalling processes are the key regulators of cellular activity in all types of cells in living organisms. A better understanding of these processes not only provides solutions to important biological problems, but also has a major impact on medical research and practice. The BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies in Freiburg uses modern analytical methods and strategies of synthetic biology to study biological signalling processes in a creative and playful way.

| FRIAS | Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) Das Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) bildet das Herzstück des Zukunftskonzeptes „Windows for Research“, mit dem die Universität Freiburg im Oktober 2007 in der Exzellenzinitiative des Bundes und der Länder erfolgreich war. Als integraler Bestandteil der Universität Freiburg vereint das Forschungskolleg besonders profilierte Forschungsbereiche der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in seinen vier Sektionen: der School of History, der School of Language & Literature, der School of Life Sciences – LifeNet und der School of Soft Matter Research.

| SFB 850 | CRC 850 “Control of Cell Motility in Morphogenesis, Cancer Invasion and Metastasis” More than 400,000 patients are diagnosed with cancer in Germany every year. Despite significant advances in research and treatment, about 50% of these patients are still going to die of their disease, because several aspects of tumour biology are still not completely understood. Among these aspects, tissue invasion and metastasis are the most complex characteristics since they involve tumour cell autonomous as well as non-autonomous processes. Importantly, metastasis represents the main cause of death for tumour patients. Therefore, the CRC 850 is dedicated to the analysis and therapeutic exploitation of the cellular and molecular events driving metastatic tumours.

Its ultimate goal is to create a top notch "Life Scientist of the Future" who can assimilate knowledge and techniques from various disciplines as well as combine basic with translational research, biotechnology and drug development.
